Meet John Looker, born in Olympia in 1949, he’s the quintessential Olympia native. John is the oldest of 4 children and the only boy in the family. When John graduated high school, he attended Washington State University with a declared major in mechanical engineering. After a year of very difficult work John decided he would transfer to Yakima Valley College where he could also obtain his pilots license. After his years in college John went to work for his father’s timber trucking company where he drove and worked on trucks for 30 years. After his father retired, John took over the trucking company but realized it wasn’t something he wanted to do for the rest of his life. After selling the company John had an epiphany and decided he would become a real estate agent.
“One summer, it was about 90 degrees, I decided I was gonna do something different. I was gonna become a real estate agent. Just like that. I remember the way the test was set up you either passed or failed, no percentages, so I triple studied night after night on my deck in 90-degree weather. I kept telling myself, this would be worth it, and when I finally took the test I passed first time.”
John has been in Olympia for so long that he has built an amazing relationship with the community, so becoming a real estate agent was something he knew he would love because he really enjoys speaking with people and helping community.
“I put myself in the buyer’s position or the sellers position and I say, ‘what can I do to help that person.’ All in all, it’s been wonderful, I love the business, and I can’t think of any other business you could do that would be better than this.”
Johns family were boaters from day one. His father would take the family out on a 21-foot wooden boat, traveling as far as Westport. Boating has been a part of Johns life since his birth, and its memories of boating with his family that have helped shape his passion to be on the water. As a member of the Olympia Yacht Club, you’ll find him out on the water almost everywhere in the Puget Sound, and if you do, give him a wave!
If you have any question about Olympia’s vast history, boating, or need someone to help you fix anything, John is your man. He’d love to hear from you so please call him at 360.451.0407 or email him at jelooker@comcast.net
